Jack’s Migration Camp

Our journey started at Jack's Camp in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. This part of Botswana has a unique landscape and wildlife. It is completely different to what we would expect later on in the Okavango Delta or the Kalahari Desert.

Besides the pans themselves, the main attraction of the camp are the several Meerkats families located nearby. We got to see one family of 7. For several hours, we followed the group while they were looking for food. Several scorpions lost their lives that morning. Exceptionally, we could step out of the vehicle and go very close up to them. For once, we were not risking to be served as breakfast to some predator but rather to step on a Meerkat.

The dominant couple had a two month old pup. It could not yet hunt by itself so it was fed by the rest of the family. At all times, at least one of them was standing up to scan the area - and the sky - for potential threads. The little one was happily contributing to that important mission.
